Leather Types
Faux leather is essentially fake leather.
Instead of being made of animal skins, these fabrics are made of other
materials and may receive numerous treatments so that they replicate the
look of leather and some of its common attributes. There are many names
under which faux leather may be sold, and these include leatherette, pleather and naugahyde.
There are many reasons to buy faux leather furniture. It's cheaper and animal friendly. And, there are many reason not to buy faux leather furniture. Real leather ages well and looks more expensive (because it is).
Bonded leather is one of the newest on the market. It's created when leather scraps and fibers are mixed
together, and then formed into a roll using adhesives or other bonding
materials. There is some controversy among furniture experts concerning whether
bonded leather is considered leather, since it usually contains only 10
to 17 percent leather fibers.
Bicast leather (also known as bycast leather, split leather or PU. leather)
is a split leather with a layer of polyurethane applied to the surface
and then embossed. Bicast leather is not 100% leather. It is not even
leather, but a leather by-product.
We advise people who want to purchase leather furniture to insist on
getting information about warranty details and the type of materials
used in its construction before they purchase.
Top
grain is the definition that is generally used when the grain is
not genuine: when the real grain is sanded away and an imitation grain
is stamped into the leather. These leathers are the most-desirable,
best-looking and most expensive. As compared to other leather types, top
grain leathers are stronger, wear better over time, and have a richer
color.
Full grain leather is the best leather money can buy. It comes from the top layer of the
hide which has all of the grain, therefore, full grain. The natural
surface of full grain leather burnishes and beautifies with use. | |
